VITE TALIN Barolo 2015

The story. The third year of Vite Talin confirms, now quite connvincingly, the distinctive features of the plant. The vine has few, indented leaves which are thick and rough to the touch. The plant appears less lush; more contained, also in terms of its production. Its grapes are smaller but its color remains vivid.

The evolution. The 2015 vintage clearly distinguishes itself from the previous two. If 2013 could be described as a traditional, even ‘classic’ year in the vineyards, 2014 then as a rather cool one, 2015 is an example of a warmer year. The winter months saw great amounts of precipitation, both rain and snow, which surpassed the seasonal average. This provided the vines with abundant water reserves. At the end of March the growing season began earlier than usual and bud break was accompanied by another phase of generous rainfalls. Only in the first days of summer we saw the onset of a very hot and dry period, with temperatures reaching peaks of 40 degrees Celsius in July.

Vite Talin's resistance. Despite the high temperatures, the plants had enough water reserves to draw on at any time. The southeastern orientation of the vineyards greatly benefitted the health of the plants preventing damage from heat or other weather extremes. The structural characteristics of Vite Talin, especially its smaller grapes with thicker skins, further strengthened the plant’s natural defense mechanisms. Likewise, the unevenness and heterogeneity of its vegetative structure permitted a better shading of the fruiting zones.

In short, the possible risks associated with a hot year were minimized thanks to the intrinsic characteristics of the vine and its location.

In the vineyards the winemaker tended to his plants, supporting their natural growth. Vite Talin showed an excellent balance, which actually spared much of the thinning work. Ripening was harmonious, if slightly anticipated, and endowed us with perfectly healthy fruit.

The wine. Sandrone’s Barolo Vite Talin 2015 is a study in contrasts - the wine shows both the character of the grape and that of the vintage. The 2015 vintage shines through in the expansive perfume - red raspberries, red cherries, pomegranate and licorice, with undercurrents of garrigue, rosemary and rose petals. The palate shows the character of the grape - great structure, significant tannins and penetrating acidity. At first, the palate is completely closed, but with patient airing the fruit and rose flavors emerge. The finish shows the ripe, deep tannins that are the trademark of Vite Talin, along with smoky, meaty and savory notes. The finish seems to linger for minutes on the palate, balanced by the freshness of the acid and the red fruits of the mid-palate. This wine should be cellared for 10-12 years before it begins to emerge from the shell and will then reward the consumer for long time.

Vite Talin 2015 tells a story of balance that is sure to charm, today as well as in the future. It is an accomplished wine, which may be enjoyed straight away but also saved for a special occasion lying ahead, showcasing Nebbiolo’s unmatched capacity to endure.

The 2015 vintage tastes of the time in which it was born and evolved: a wine which can be led through the years, and eventually take the lead.
